Welcome to this drawing tutorial! Drawing a sunflower can unleash your creativity level. This tutorial will help you to draw a sunflower step-by-step, even if you are a beginner and love to draw a sunflower.
Why I decided to Draw a Sunflower Today
Want to learn how to draw a sunflower step-by-step? What a coincidence! It just so happens to draw a step-by-step sunflower tutorial today. Here’s why. When I wandered into my garden this morning like I often do, I was greeted by a vibrant sunflower in full flower. I was captivated by its shiny yellow petals and tall, proud stance. It was a joyful and inspiring scene, especially how it turned towards the sun.
Moved by its beauty and the positive energy it radiated, as an artist I was attracted to capture its presence on my paper. I am excited to share the sunflower art tutorial with you. I also hope you’ll love this step-by-step guide.
Materials you’ll need
- Sketchbook
- pencil
- kneaded eraser
Step No. 1: Draw a circle
On the top half of the page, draw a large circle. (or the region where you want the flowers to be). Make sure to include space underneath for the stem since this circle will determine the final size of the bloom. Draw your circle lighter than I draw on my page. I pulled it to make sure you could see the circle.
Step 2: Smaller Circle
Now draw a circle within the larger one. Make sure it is smaller than the first one. If you want the sunflower petals to be small, you can draw this circle bigger, and if you want the petals to be big, draw this circle smaller.Step 3. Center core for sunflower
Draw a circle that is only slightly smaller than the last one and slightly draw it towards the left of the circle. There will be a little more space on the right side than on the left. Make sure these 3 circles are not touching each other, and use an eraser to fix any mistakes as you go. Creating a good foundation will make this sunflower tutorial much easier.Step 4. The First Petal of a Sunflower
Now we can begin drawing the petals, as we have the center of the flower and outer edges set up. Drawing flower petals correctly requires them to move away from the center; picture sun rays coming from a sun. I drew this little sun buddy from the diagram. It helps us remember this point. Try to replicate the blue-drawn curve by drawing a curved line from the second circle to the outer circle.Step 5. Bottom of Petal
Now let's add a line slightly below the other one and make them meet at the outer circle. Notice how this line hangs down whereas the previous one curved up. Always remember that one of the key characteristics of sunflowers is that they have pointed petals, so we have to learn how to draw them. Most flowers have more rounded tips but always capture these sharp corners when drawing sunflowers.Step 6. Next Petal
Let's draw a petal that is slightly above the last one, repeat the process that we used for the last one but make sure the bottom line of this petal starts at the top of the last one. Notice that the pink line intersects the final petal instead of the second circle. The overlaps indicate that the first petal is above the one we are currently drawing.Step 7 lower petal
Now add another petal but leave some distance. In the beginning, creating uneven distance between the petals will help develop natural layers for the petals. Make sure, we have to create these petals tips sharp.Step 8 make petals with some distance
Make petals as I’ve created in this picture. Observe the uneven distance I’ve created. Make sure these petals are with uneven distances. Uneven distance means there is this distance between some petals.Step 9 In between petals
You created the first layer of petals with me, so we can start adding the ones underneath. Referencing the blue line in the diagram, draw a triangle that joins the two petals. Observe how the petal edges that reach the flower's center are visible. Ensure that you obtain this overlap.Step 10 Adding Petals Tips
We continue creating sunflower tips in the spaces. Make sure to draw these tips sharp and pointed. Let’s doStep 11 Add the Lower Right Petal of the Sunflower.
Now we add slightly longer edges than the tips we are drawing. We can view more of this petal because of the wider empty area.Step 12 Top petal Of the Sunflower
It’s time to repeat the last step with some space near the top of the Sunflower.
Step 13 Filling spaces
In the two large spaces, add two petals that virtually meet at the core.
Step 14 Fill the spaces by adding tiny tips
Add tiny triangles to the places we have available to represent additional petals piled behind. Make sure that these tips still fit inside the circle instructions that we drew earlier.Step 15 Draw a stem of the Sunflower
Let us draw two vertical lines that descend from the flower’s center to give it a stem. Notice that the stem is positioned just slightly to the right of the bloom because we drew the flower facing to the left. The slightly bigger space between the two core circles indicates that we see more of the right side of the core, that is why we draw the smaller circle slightly to the left. ( I realize that this sounds a little confusing, but as you draw more flowers, you will start to get what I mean.)Step 16 Add a leaf
Now we draw a leaf of the sunflower. This leaf will add to the stem. You can draw the shape of the leaf as you want. To give my leaf a realistic appearance, I designed it quite small and with some jagged edges.Step 17 Add tips & shading
As with the right side of the flower, fill in the tips on the left side as well. After you have finished that, begin drawing some lines on the tops of the petals around the flower's center (the diagram shows these as tiny, blue lines). Additionally, begin lightly darkening the core's right side.Step 19 Shade the center and Stem of the Sunflower
Apply some shade to the sunflower's center core. I like to keep my shading pretty light, but you may go darker if you want your sunflower to look more genuine. This region is typically home to exceptionally dark sunflower seeds. To indicate that the stem is behind the flower, add shade to the stem just before it disappears behind the petals.Step 20 Final Step Celebrate your Drawing
